The Fall is quickly turning to Winter, and as we gear up for another potentially long and blustery season, I love to see parents making an effort to maintain interest in the outdoors and encourage their kids to do the same. Taking a walk this morning I marvelled at the Scouts kids camped out by a pond outside of Barrie. The smell of fire and tents unzipping in the first light of the morning, the tops of picnic tables frosty with lingering flurries, and the smell of coffee brewing from the woods was so inspiring. In our ever-convenient world of creature comforts, endless screens and mindless entertainment, I feel it is becoming increasingly important to find or create ways for you and your children to get outside and remind ourselves where we have come from and where our daily instincts arose from. I always encourage families and group leaders to reach out to me to share ideas about combating the mobile monster industry, and I invite you to do the same. With each student I infuse with outdoor knowledge and basic survival and safety skills, I feel they are more aware of the endless amusement, wonder and curiosity nature satisfies, empowered with tools and skills to improve and enhance their time outside, and to fuel that diminishing desire to put down the game console and turn to nature as a much healthier and life-enriching source of entertainment.
Get Outdoors was designed as a solution for the growing problem our children and teens are facing in today’s society. Some have coined the term as ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’. Whatever you want to call it, it is numbing out the thousands of years of self-sustaining instincts we humans have skillfully developed to thrive and prosper as a wonderfully enriching and empowering way of life. Enrich Your childrens’ lives this month; register for any of our upcoming courses happening every week; get certified in First Aid; sign up for a private lesson, or bring Get Outdoors to your party or group function for a creative and fun outdoor ‘infusion’ and taste of what we can bring to your quality of life!
Looking forward to learning and sharing with you!
