Have you ever heard someone say “I took CPR a long time ago but it was so boring, I don’t remember a thing!”
Richard King believes that today’s first aid courses are bland and non-stimulating. Through Get Outdoors, Richard intends to change the way these lifesaving courses are taught by offering highly interactive roleplaying activities, tailored course material and innovative ways of teaching to make educating fun and impactful in his classes.
Says Richard on his classroom environment:
“Sometimes I’ll throw in an impromptu Jeopardy game to get them to remember concepts while playing a game, so they don’t even realize they’re learning. I usually keep a few prizes on hand for those who show real initiative during the course. Or if everyone looks like they’re falling asleep, I have a couple of (shocking) ways to get everyone’s attention in a hurry, even just to get them laughing or break up the atmosphere. “
Richard loathed the way First Aid was taught when he was growing up, and now he strives to make every class anything but repetitive or lackluster. “These are critical lifesaving skills they are learning. This information could mean a life or death situation, so I will do everything I can to make sure they remember the material and commit it to memory, for that one time it’s going to really matter.”
